The past few weeks, APAMSA has been involved in a few lunch talks and other events:

APAMSA Lunch Talk – 2/21/13

We learned more about HBV and its significant threat to minorities here in Ohio. Every year 350M are infected with HBV, 600K will die. While Asian Americans are known to be greatly affected, a surprising 2007 IOM report revealed the highest rate of infection that year occurred among non-Hispanic Black men.

WHAT: Hepatitis B in Ohio

WHO: Dr. Jonathan Tolentino, MD

Culinary Club Potluck – 2/27/13

The Culinary Club and APAMSA held a joint potluck to celebrate the Lunar New Year! It was a fabulous event!

LMSA Lunch Talk – 2/28/13

LMSA, in conjunction with APAMSA, SNMA, and Medical Bioethics, is excited to have had Dr. Jack Rubinstein from the department of cardiology return.  The discussion topic will be Non-communicable Diseases in the Third World.

Hi everyone!

APAMSA, along with SNMA and LMSA, is holding a bone marrow drive in conjunction with Swab a Cheek, Save a Life!  The mission of the organization is “to ensure that every person who needs a life saving bone marrow transplant will have an equal opportunity to find one.”  Thus, their primary goals are to recruit minority donors and keep donors enrolled.  We want to aid in their mission by expanding the bone marrow registry.
We are looking for about ~25 volunteers to help conduct cheek swabs (1 hour shifts) to add people to the registry: Thursday November 15 (12-5PM) & Friday November 16 (12-3PM).  All volunteers who run the drive will receive a free t-shirt from Swab a Cheek, Save a Life, and it is mandatory to attend the training session occurring Wednesday November 7 at 1PM.  If you are interested in swabbing people, please sign up HERE!  If you don’t have the time, please consider dropping by and getting swabbed to be added to the registry!
Wednesday November 14 (12-1PM) – Lunch talk about hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, Dr. Parinda Mehta, MSB3051
Thursday November 15 (12-5PM) – Bone marrow drive, MSB atrium
Friday November 16 (12-3PM) – Bone marrow drive, MSB atrium

Planning for Bone Marrow Drive October 15, 2012

1 comment so far

M1s:

Planning is underway for the Bone Marrow Drive.  Here’s what’s known/planned so far:
  • 2 drives will be held, one on the undergrad campus and one in MSB – last year the drives were held on two days (total 4 days)
  • Date/time: Thursday/Friday November 15 (12-5PM)/16 (12-3PM) for the drive at MSB
  • A lunchtalk will be held the day before (Wednesday November 14) to promote the drive; speaker is Dr. Parinda Mehta (CCHMC pediatric hem/oncologist)
  • Duties have been divided up among the board; Sheela, you said you are willing to help out, we don’t have any specific tasks for you thus far 🙂
  • However, we will be calling on all your guys’ help (and perhaps on other M1s/M2s too, depending) to pick up shifts to man the table during the drive
If you guys have any questions/comments/suggestions…let us know!
Thanks,
APAMSA Board
